Asylum Access, an innovative, US-based international nonprofit dedicated to making
refugee rights a reality in the global south, seeks a Volunteer Development Manager.
The Volunteer Development Manager will serve as a key member of the Asylum Access
team and will be responsible for supporting all aspects of our fundraising efforts. She/he
will report directly to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement a fundraising plan to maximize private (individual, corporate, and foundation) support for Asylum Access.
  2. Build Asylum Access’s individual donor program by:
  • Engaging in hands-on fundraising from Asylum Access’s portfolio of individual donors;
  • Working to increase Asylum Access’s Board of Directors’ ability to cultivate and secure major donors;
  • Designing communication tools for fundraising.

3.  Build Asylum Access’s institutional donor program by:

  • Researching grant-making organizations and analyzing them to identify likely funding sources for specific projects and programs
  • Writing, editing and submitting institutional grant applications
  • Developing individual grant proposals that are in line with each grantmaking organization’s preferences and guidelines
  • Staying connected to grant-making organizations during their review of a submitted grant application in order to be able to supply additional supportive material
  • Manage the development program by tracking progress toward fundraising goals, maintaining appropriate record keeping, and producing internal reports to ensure the success of our development work.
  • Identify and assist with cultivating new foundation and individual donors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience building a healthy and diverse funding base as well as managing a complex fundraising program; demonstrated success in prospecting, cultivating, soliciting, and closing foundation grants and individual/major gifts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills; candidate should be anattentive listener, articulate speaker, and clear and persuasive writer who can appeal to various audiences.
  • Proven track record of improving operational performance; ability to focus on outcomes and details.
  • Financial management and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

This unique volunteer opportunity will allow our new Volunteer Development Manager
the chance to work with a startup nonprofit in action while supporting innovative and lifesaving
legal work being done in our offices abroad. This position will initially be unpaid,
but may turn into a part-time or full-time paid position for the right candidate.
Additionally, the Volunteer will be able to gain valuable experience while networking
within the San Francisco and national philanthropic scenes.
