Dear readers,<\/p>\n
Now we know:\u00a0 this\u00a0 year\u2019s Nobel Prize in Economics goes to the French professor Jean Tirole. This is an excellent choice (even if there have been other splendid candidates as well). I like the award going to Tirole for different reasons:<\/p>\n
1.The general research area\u00a0 with focus on microeconomics and the corporate sector is well chosen \u2013 and, of course, Tirole\u2019s specialization on, for example,\u00a0 competition, regulation, auctions, game theory and liquidity. We get reminded of the importance of the economics of firms.<\/p>\n
2. The award to Tirole also means that European research – at least partly – can compete with the dominating American universities.<\/p>\n
3. This third point is not directly linked to the announcement of today – but it\u2019s nice to hear that Tirole\u2019s long fight for making Toulouse an attractive university – together with Jean-Jacques Laffont who unfortunately passed away too early – was worth-while.<\/p>\n
All in all, Tirole was my favorite Nobel Prize candidate for 2014. Next year it may be Anthony Atkinson.
