Det \u00e4r bra och baserat p\u00e5 brett sakligt underlag b\u00e5de om urholkningen och en ny rapport om den samh\u00e4llsekonomiska vinsten med investeringar i h\u00f6gre utbildning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men denna insikt t\u00e4nker man bara anv\u00e4nda p\u00e5 en \u2013 f\u00f6rvisso viktig \u2013 sektor (ingenj\u00f6rsutbildningar) och dessutom p\u00e5 bekostnad av andra. Med en v\u00e4ldigt personlig h\u00e4nvisning till att frist\u00e5ende kurser utifr\u00e5n sin titel kan betecknas som \u201dhobbykurser\u201d och ges de dessutom p\u00e5 distans s\u00e5 har de ofta l\u00e4gre genomstr\u00f6mning. D\u00e4rmed konstateras att de kan tas bort f\u00f6r att finansiera den prioriterade satsningen p\u00e5 ingenj\u00f6rsutbildningar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>B\u00e5de rektorer, studenter, forskare och ledarskribenter har p\u00e5pekat att dessa kurser ofta \u00e4r delar av program, att ekonomi, samh\u00e4llsbygge, v\u00e4lf\u00e4rdssektor och att den gr\u00f6na omst\u00e4llningen kr\u00e4ver fler kompetenser \u00e4n ingenj\u00f6rernas. Det \u00e4r en omistlig del av det livsl\u00e5nga l\u00e4randet som g\u00f6rs tillg\u00e4ngligt f\u00f6r fler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P\u00e5 Linn\u00e9universitetet \u00e4r n\u00e5gra av v\u00e5ra mest s\u00f6kta kurser p\u00e5 distans&nbsp;utm\u00e4rkt fortbildning f\u00f6r yrkesverksamma&nbsp;(till exempel&nbsp;Psykologi, Projektledning, Socialr\u00e4tt).&nbsp;Dessa har alla fler \u00e4n tusen s\u00f6kande.&nbsp;N\u00e5gra \u00e4r helt unika som distanskursen i&nbsp;H\u00e5llbart familjeskogsbruk. Detta \u00e4r bara n\u00e5gra exempel p\u00e5 hur vi som universitet f\u00f6rs\u00f6ker matcha omv\u00e4rldens behov b\u00e5de nu och l\u00e5ngsiktigt, studenternas intressen med v\u00e5r egen forskningskompetens. Alla dessa kurser h\u00e5ller h\u00f6g vetenskaplig kvalitet \u2013 annars ges de inte. I Europa tittar man avundsjukt p\u00e5 Sverige och vill inf\u00f6ra frist\u00e5ende kurser av h\u00f6g kvalitet f\u00f6r att f\u00e5 mer flexibel kompetensutveckling av studenter i olika skeden av livet och f\u00f6r arbetsmarknadens behov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nu f\u00e5r vi i Sverige h\u00f6ra att dessa kurser inte fyller n\u00e5gon viktig funktion, kan minskas eller l\u00e4ggas ner. Det kan de \u2013 men blir Sverige d\u00e5 mer eller mindre konkurrenskraftigt? \u00c4r detta ett exempel p\u00e5 respekt f\u00f6r den akademiska frihetens potential att g\u00f6ra de klokaste valen \u2013 eller en gammaldags tro p\u00e5 centralplaneringens r\u00e4tt och f\u00f6rm\u00e5ga att g\u00f6ra b\u00e4ttre val?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sverige beh\u00f6ver en bred satsning p\u00e5 \u00f6kad kvalitet i h\u00f6gre utbildning och forskning. Finland siktar p\u00e5 ett BNP-m\u00e5l f\u00f6r forskning p\u00e5 4 procent \u2013 i Sverige krymper det \u00f6ver \u00e5ren. Allt detta g\u00f6r mig bekymrad f\u00f6r Sveriges framtid som en kreativ och vital kunskapsnation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nu har vi talat om vilka konsekvenser detta utspel kan f\u00e5. Nu beh\u00f6ver medborgare, n\u00e4ringsliv och v\u00e4lf\u00e4rdssektor s\u00e4tta tryck p\u00e5 att det starka h\u00f6gskolesystem Sverige byggt upp under decennier inte i grunden nedmonteras. This is a positive recognition based on a broad factual foundation concerning both the erosion and a new report on the socioeconomic benefits of investments in higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this insight will be applied to only one \u2013 admittedly important \u2013 sector (engineering programmes) at the expense of others. With a very personal reference stating that some independent courses, based on their title, can be labelled &#8221;hobby courses&#8221;. Given that they are also often offered online, they are noted to have a lower student completion rate. Thus, it is concluded that they can be discontinued to fund the prioritised investment in engineering programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice-chancellors, students, researchers, and editorial writers have pointed out that these courses are often parts of programmes, and that the economy, societal construction, welfare sector, and the green transition require more competencies than just those of engineers. It is an indispensable part of lifelong learning that is made accessible to more people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Linnaeus University, some of our most popular online courses are excellent continuing professional development for active professionals (for example, Psychology, Project management, Social law). All these have more than a thousand applicants. Some are entirely unique, like the distance course in Sustainable small-scale forestry. These are just a few examples of how we, as a university, try to match the needs of the society, both now and in the long term, aligning student interests with our own research expertise. All these courses are of high scientific quality \u2013 otherwise they would not be offered. In many countries in Europe, people look at Sweden with envy and want to introduce independent courses of high quality to provide more flexible skills development for students at different stages of life as well as for the needs of the labour market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, we are told in Sweden that these courses do not serve any important function, can be reduced or discontinued. They can \u2013 but will it make Sweden more or less competitive? Is this an example of respect for the potential of academic freedom to make the wisest choices \u2013 or an outdated belief in central planning&#8217;s right and ability to make better choices?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweden needs to invest broadly in increased quality in higher education and research. Finland is aiming for 4 percent of GDP for research \u2013 in Sweden, it is shrinking over the years. All this makes me concerned for Sweden&#8217;s future as a creative and vital knowledge nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have discussed what consequences this move may have. Now citizens, businesses, and the welfare sector need to put pressure to ensure that the strong higher education system Sweden has built over many decades is not dismantled.
