Jag var i tisdags med andra svenska universitet p\u00e5 brittiska ambassaden f\u00f6r \u00f6verl\u00e4ggningar med organisationen Universities UK om hur vi ska forts\u00e4tta att utveckla v\u00e5ra m\u00e5nga samarbeten till f\u00f6rdel f\u00f6r kunskaps- och samh\u00e4llsutveckling.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>M\u00f6tet v\u00e4cker \u00e5terigen tankar om hur v\u00e4rden vi kan ta f\u00f6r givna kan sopas bort \u00f6ver en natt. L\u00e5nga investeringar i f\u00f6rtroende f\u00f6r samh\u00e4llsb\u00e4rande institutioner blir inte bara osynliga utan symboler f\u00f6r ett sviket samh\u00e4llskontrakt d\u00e5 de inte \u00f6vertygar om att de bidrar till medborgarnas framtid. Pl\u00f6tsligt riktas besvikelsen mot de som faktiskt p\u00e5 avg\u00f6rande s\u00e4tt bidragit till ett gott liv och v\u00e4gvalen blir till sj\u00e4lvskadebeteende p\u00e5 samh\u00e4llsniv\u00e5.<\/p>\n<h3>Kunskapsbildningens viktiga roll<\/h3>\n<p>I mitt senaste stora forskningsprojekt ledde jag forskning som studerade de europeiska nationalmuseernas f\u00f6rm\u00e5ga att f\u00e5nga nationernas problem och stolthet till en relevant ram f\u00f6r samhandling (www.eunamus.eu). Den skiftar stort. Tyskland tillh\u00f6r de framg\u00e5ngsrika och Grekland de som misslyckats. M\u00f6nstret \u00e4r tydligt. Skapandet av moderna museer \u00e4r inte bara samtida med universiteten, de \u00e4r syskon som kunskapsinstitutioner. Kunskapsbildning, \u00f6ppna f\u00f6r offentligheten, med relevans f\u00f6r politikens f\u00f6ruts\u00e4ttningar l\u00e4gger grunden f\u00f6r kloka beslut och ett f\u00f6rnuftigt samtal. De bidrar till en kulturell konstitution som n\u00e4r den \u00e4r av h\u00f6g kvalitet och relevans l\u00e4gger basen f\u00f6r en h\u00e5llbar och verksam politisk konstitution.<\/p>\n<p>Hur v\u00e4l st\u00e5r sig de akademiska systemen sett i detta perspektiv? Har vi en tillr\u00e4ckligt h\u00f6g kvalitet och relevans exempelvis i Sverige och i Storbritannien? Svaret \u00e4r ja, men inte utan f\u00f6rbeh\u00e5ll. I Storbritannien var universiteten till 100 procent emot Brexit och ytterst f\u00e5 s\u00e5g kantringen komma och det brittiska universitetssystemet \u00e4r satt under st\u00f6rre politisk och ekonomisk press \u00e4n det svenska. Vi k\u00e4nner igen \u00f6verraskningen i f\u00f6rlorad tillit till det \u00f6ppna samh\u00e4llets institutioner i fler l\u00e4nder. Uppenbarligen var det stora grupper som inte s\u00e5g sambandet mellan en internationellt livaktig och m\u00e5ngsidig akademi och en positiv samh\u00e4llsutveckling. Detta trots att man i Storbritannien har varit b\u00e4ttre p\u00e5 att lyfta starka och m\u00e5ngsidiga exempel p\u00e5 universitetens betydelse i samverkan med n\u00e4ringsliv, f\u00f6r v\u00e4lf\u00e4rd, offentlighet och civilsamh\u00e4lle.<\/p>\n<h3>Sju g\u00e5nger tillbaka p\u00e5 en satsad krona<\/h3>\n<p>En liknande brist i synlighet p\u00e5 sambanden mellan universitetets roll och samh\u00e4lle signaleras i Sverige och beh\u00f6ver m\u00f6tas innan klyftan vidgats. Hur ser inv\u00e5narna och f\u00f6retagarna i Linn\u00e9regionen p\u00e5 Linn\u00e9universitetets roll i samh\u00e4llet? Ser man hur v\u00e5rt universitet har bidragit till att utveckla regionen vad g\u00e4ller tillv\u00e4xt och attraktivitet?En stor unders\u00f6kning av europeiska universitet visar att varje insatt krona ger sju g\u00e5nger tillbaka i ekonomisk tillv\u00e4xt. Har vi tydligt kunnat visa detta samband och motivera att v\u00e5rt universitet f\u00e5r samma f\u00f6ruts\u00e4ttningar som storst\u00e4dernas? Svaret \u00e4r nej, inte tillr\u00e4ckligt framg\u00e5ngsrikt och det m\u00e5ste f\u00f6r\u00e4ndras. Annars finns en risk att v\u00e5ra prestationer, som kr\u00e4ver betydande bidrag fr\u00e5n det offentliga, f\u00f6retag och privatpersoner inte forts\u00e4tter att samlas med den kraft som beh\u00f6vs f\u00f6r den fortsatta utvecklingen. Det \u00e4r inte sj\u00e4lvklart att svenska universitet i allm\u00e4nhet och Linn\u00e9universitetet i synnerhet f\u00e5r tillr\u00e4ckligt underlag f\u00f6r att kunna utveckla sin roll fram\u00f6ver.<\/p>\n<h3>Viktigt visa hur vi bidrar till en b\u00e4ttre framtid<\/h3>\n<p>H\u00e4r finns en stor uppgift f\u00f6r universitet: Vi beh\u00f6ver bli b\u00e4ttre p\u00e5 att synligg\u00f6ra hur v\u00e5r verksamhet redan nu bidrar till samh\u00e4llsutvecklingen och hur vi i framtiden kan bidra \u00e4nnu mer. V\u00e5r framst\u00e5ende forskning, v\u00e5ra utmanande utbildningar, v\u00e5ra alumner och samarbetspartners, och v\u00e5ra medarbetare, b\u00e5de i deras arbete p\u00e5 universitetet och i externa uppdrag, \u00e4r en fantastisk resurs. Bara genom att vara relevant f\u00f6r fler och st\u00f6rre delar av samh\u00e4llet och med kraft synligg\u00f6ra dessa insatser, s\u00e5 kan den os\u00e4kerhet som globalisering och teknikutveckling f\u00f6r med sig, omvandlas fr\u00e5n r\u00e4dsla, misstro och sj\u00e4lvskadebeteende till v\u00e4lgrundad framtidstro som frig\u00f6r m\u00e4nniskors m\u00f6jligheter att f\u00f6rverkliga sina egna livsm\u00e5l och bidra till ett h\u00e5llbart samh\u00e4lle.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"english\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vi ska g\u00f6ra v\u00e5r l\u00e4xa, men klarar det inte sj\u00e4lva.\u00a0Vi beh\u00f6ver st\u00f6d fr\u00e5n politiker, myndigheter, kulturinstitutioner, media, n\u00e4ringsliv, medborgare och studenter f\u00f6r det fortsatta arbetets framg\u00e5ng. Jag kommer att \u00e5terkomma med mer konkret inbjudan om olika s\u00e4tt att delta i framtidsbygget.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Knowledge institutions of the future and the societal contract<\/h2>\n<p>This week, the European Union and Great Britain decided on how to proceed with the unexpected and, in the eyes of many people, undesirable separation. Last Tuesday, I visited the British embassy together with other universities for deliberations with Universities UK on how we can continue to develop our numerous collaborations to the benefit of knowledge and societal development.<\/p>\n<p>This meeting once again raises questions about how values we take for granted can be swept away overnight. Long-term investments in confidence in strong societal institutions are not only made invisible but become symbols of an abandoned societal contract since they have not managed to convince citizens that they contribute to their future. All of a sudden, the disappointment is aimed at those who have actually, in a critical way, contributed to a good life and the crossroads become self-injury behaviour at societal level.<\/p>\n<h3>The important role of knowledge formation<\/h3>\n<p>In my latest large research project, I led a research team that studied the European national museums\u2019 ability to capture the problems and pride of the nations into a relevant framework for coaction (www.eunamus.eu). This ability varies a lot between countries. Germany is among the successful ones and Greece is among those who have failed. The pattern is clear. The establishment of modern museums is not only concurrent with the universities, they are knowledge institution siblings. Both contribute to knowledge formation, are open to the public, of relevance for political conditions and form the basis for making wise decisions and engaging in a reasonable dialogue. They contribute to a cultural constitution which, when it is of a high quality and relevance, forms the basis for a sustainable and active political constitution.<\/p>\n<p>How well do the academic systems keep up from this perspective? Do we have a sufficiently high quality and relevance in, for instance, Sweden and Great Britain? The answer is yes, but not without reservation. In Great Britain, 100% of the universities opposed Brexit and very few of them were able to predict the upheaval. The British higher education system is also under greater political and economic pressure than the Swedish one. We can see the surprise of lost trust in the institutions of the open society in a number of countries. Apparently, large groups of people did not see the connection between an internationally active and diverse academy and a positive societal development. This despite the fact that the Brits have been better at presenting strong and diverse examples of the importance of collaboration between universities and the industry for well-being, public sector and civil society.<\/p>\n<h3>Seven times the money for each spent Swedish crown<\/h3>\n<p>A similar lack of visibility for the connection between the universities\u2019 role and society is signaled in Sweden and needs to be met before the crack widens. How do inhabitants and companies in the Linnaeus region view Linnaeus University\u2019s role in society? Is it clear how our university has contributed to the development and growth of the region and made it more attractive? A large survey of European universities shows that for every Swedish crown invested, universities give seven times the investment back in economic growth. Have we been able to demonstrate this connection clearly and motivate that our university should be given the same conditions as the universities in the big cities? The answer is no, not successfully enough, and this must change. Otherwise there is a risk that our performance \u2013 which requires significant contributions from the public sector, companies and individuals \u2013 will not continue to gather the strength needed for the continued development. It cannot be taken for granted that Swedish universities in general and Linnaeus University in particular will receive enough funding to be able to continue to develop its role in the future.<\/p>\n<h3>Important to show how we contribute to a better future<\/h3>\n<p>The university has a large task ahead of it: We must become better at highlighting how our activities already directly contribute, and can contribute even more in the future, through prominent research, challenging educations, our alumni, our collaboration partners, and our members of staff when working at the university as well as when working on collaborations and commissions not part of their appointments. Only by being relevant to more people and to a larger part of society, and by vividly visualising these efforts, can the insecurity brought about by globalisation and technological development be transformed from fear, distrust and self-injury behaviour into a well-founded belief in the future that liberates people\u2019s opportunities to realise their own life goals and contribute to a sustainable society.<\/p>\n<p>We have to do our homework, but we cannot do this alone. We need the support from politicians, authorities, cultural institutions, media, the trade and industry, citizens and students in order for the future work to be successful.
