Since then, UNESCO and others have been deliberating whether they ought to be reconstructed.<\/p>\r\n<p>Now the current state of the discussion has been published by Springer in a volume entitled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007%2F978-3-030-51316-0\"><em>The Future of the Bamiyan Buddha Statues<\/em><\/a>, summarising the outcomes of a UNESCO conference held in Tokyo in 2017.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007%2F978-3-030-51316-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1473\" src=\"http:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/files\/2020\/12\/51F2IJBic4L._SX330_BO1204203200_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2020\/12\/51F2IJBic4L._SX330_BO1204203200_.jpg 332w, https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2020\/12\/51F2IJBic4L._SX330_BO1204203200_-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a>The book contains a chapter by Cornelius Holtorf entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-030-51316-0_10\">Destruction and Reconstruction of Cultural Heritage as Future-Making<\/a>&#8220;. He argues that\u00a0before any specific reconstructions of the Buddha statues are commissioned, we should consider several alternative futures for the past:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>will there be new audiences for heritage among the growing populations of Asia?<\/li>\r\n<li>Will digital and interactive ways of presentation reduce the significance of genuine artefacts?<\/li>\r\n<li>Will the preference for dark and painful heritage grow and perhaps increasingly demand stories about the Taliban rather than about Buddhism?<\/li>\r\n<li>Or will heritage tourism come to an end altogether?\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2001, the Taliban blew the Bamiyan Buddha statues to pieces.
