{"id":2823,"date":"2022-11-18T19:00:28","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T18:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/?p=2823"},"modified":"2022-11-19T09:16:22","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T08:16:22","slug":"cop-27-on-loss-and-damage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/?p=2823","title":{"rendered":"COP 27 on loss and damage"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>The United Nations Climate Change Conference (<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/cop27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COP 27<\/a>) held in November 2022 in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, featured among many other events a session entitled &#8220;Losing the Irreplaceable: Loss &amp; Damage, Culture &amp; Heritage&#8221; which was arranged as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cop-resilience-hub.org\/\">Resilience Hub<\/a> on 17 November 2022.<\/p>\r\n<p>This session, which Cornelius Holtorf attended digitally, was about cultural dimensions of loss and damage as a result of climate change. It asked: How does one grieve from the loss of the irreplaceable? What is the price of cultural extinction? Does loss mean the same thing in every culture?<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/files\/2022\/11\/Picture1-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2849\" src=\"https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/files\/2022\/11\/Picture1-1-1024x586.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"414\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2022\/11\/Picture1-1-1024x586.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2022\/11\/Picture1-1-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2022\/11\/Picture1-1-768x440.png 768w, https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2022\/11\/Picture1-1.png 1179w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>In this perspective, heritage represents something irreplaceable that needs to be saved from loss and protected from damage.<\/p>\r\n<p>But another way of looking at some of these issues is by asking: can heritage help us to increase resilience and adapt culture and heritage to changing natural conditions? What heritage is being created as a result of climate change?
