{"id":972,"date":"2020-03-08T08:46:02","date_gmt":"2020-03-08T07:46:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/?p=972"},"modified":"2021-04-03T08:02:17","modified_gmt":"2021-04-03T07:02:17","slug":"preserved-for-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/?p=972","title":{"rendered":"Preserved for the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cornelius Holtorf contributed with Martin Kunze to the art project &#8220;Ineligible&#8221; which is currently displayed as part of the exhibition &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/miec.cm-stirso.pt\/en\/portfolio\/creativeunmakings\/\">Creative (Un)makings: Dispruptions in Art\/Archaeology<\/a>&#8221; that is curated by Doug Bailey and Sara Navarro and held at the <em>International Museum of Contemporary Sculpture<\/em> in Santo Tirso, Portugal (6 March &#8211; 14 June 2020). <em>Ineligible<\/em> removed archaeological\u00a0artefacts from the context of an excavation in San Francisco, disarticulates and repurposes them as raw materials in order to address contemporary political and social issues.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/files\/2020\/03\/20200306_144942.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-991\" src=\"http:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/files\/2020\/03\/20200306_144942-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2020\/03\/20200306_144942-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2020\/03\/20200306_144942-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2020\/03\/20200306_144942-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogg.lnu.se\/unesco\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/209\/files\/sites\/209\/2020\/03\/20200306_144942.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Holtorf and Kunze\u00b4s work is entitled &#8220;Preserved for the future&#8221;, and it addresses\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">the global politics of loss and preservation. A shoe from San Francisco was burned reducing it to small fragments of minerals. The ceramic tile contains the photograph of a shadow of the shoe together with some of its tangible remains. A duplicate was deposited in the <span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memory-of-mankind.com\">Memory of Mankind<\/a> storage facility at Hallstatt in Austria where it may survive for hundreds of thousands of years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In an ultimate act of preservation, the shoe of one human who lived a century ago has thus become part of the memory of humankind. To allow this prospect of preservation for the future, the shoe was translated into ashes and a shadow of itself.
