European Researchers’ Night at Kafe de Luxe, Friday 27/09 at 19.00

On behalf of one of the other LNUCs the Centre for Intermedial and Multimodal Studies (IMS) we would like to invite you to the second edition of the successful European Researchers’ Night/ForskarFredag event, which will be held on Friday 27/09 in Kafe de Luxe at 19.00.

 The event will feature six short (and fun) presentations of new research from IMS members, a digital art installation on the theme of water called “deSALinatiON”, and a media bingo (with prizes!)

There will be a free fika and the bar will be open to purchase additional food and drinks.

PhD-course: Applied Machine Learning 3 credits

Data mining and machine learning is an area within computer science with the goal of bringing meaning to and learning from data. This course mixes theory and practice, with a focus on applied machine learning where we learn what algorithms and approaches to apply on different types of data.

The course includes the following:
• Supervised learning, different types of data and data processing
• Algorithms for handling text documents
• Algorithms for handling data with numerical and categorical attributes
• Neural Networks
• Deep Learning for image recognition

The course will start on Tuesday October 8th with workshops on October 29th, November 26th

Nico Reski will present the progress of his doctoral studies in Computer and Information Science so far, and the work we have been conducting at the VRxAR Labs research group. This involves topics such as virtual reality, 3D user interfaces, immersive analytics, and computer-supported cooperative work. During the second part of the seminar I am looking forward to have a discussion with the audience regarding feedback and future directions of this work.

Heart rate, sleep patterns, and location information: Citizens share their personal data daily through social media and connected devices. Citizens and patients do not clearly know who owns, utilizes or shares their personal data, says Cory Robinson, a social science researcher.

Analysis of Image Captions in Scientific Publications

On 28 May from 13 till 14.30, in F322 (Växjö) we will have a talk by a visiting professor to the iInstitute, Christian Wartena from University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hanover.

In the project NOA of the Technischen Informationsbibliothek (TIB) and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hanover we collect images with a free license from open access publications in order to make them available via Wikimedia Commons and thus to increase the potentials to reuse scientific images. In order to annotate and describe the content of the images techniques from image recognition are not suited.  Instead we analyze the captions and the passages referring to the image. We will show what specific problems the extraction of keywords from captions provides and how we solved them. Especially we will show, what role the imagery and concreteness of words, two notions form psycholinguistics, can play and how we can determine these values for arbitrary words.

On Friday May 10, at 13.15-15.00, in D1136, Jonas Lundberg has three guest lecturers from industry giving a presentation about how machine learning is used in their companies.

It’s a part a course and is open for all students in Computer Science and Media Technology but we would also like to know staff  from DISA to attend the meeting if you are curios to know more about what is being done in industry

Each presenter will also present an exciting machine learning project they are currently working on.

PhD course INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS OF RESEARCH AND SCIENCE (4.5 credits)

The findings, experiences, and ideas that emerge from research have traditionally been utilised through academic publication and teaching programmes. However, academic impact alone is no longer enough for a successful research career. With the growing emphasis in the research funding landscape on maximising impact beyond academia, it is increasingly important that
researchers reach wider society by embedding non-academic impact strategies in their projects, by working with a range of non-academic partners, and by using ever more innovative methods of dissemination and utilisation. This course showcases a range of approaches researchers can employ to ensure that their research has impact and relevance beyond universities. It will also provide students with tools that will help them best communicate the value of their work to research funders and potential investors.

Lecturers and content

You will be provided with knowledge around idea development within research. Particular emphasis will be given to developing an understanding of ’research impact’ and how to embed this in your projects.

Eligibility and further details

The course is offered to PhD students in all disciplines from Karlstad University, Linnaeus University, Mid Sweden University and Örebro University. The course consists of three mandatory seminars in the autumn of 2019 (Karlstad Sep 11-12th, Kalmar Oct 22-24th and Stockholm Nov 21st). The innovation office Fyrklövern covers the cost of your course travel and accommodation. The course is taught in English.

Open Science Hackathon April 6-7

What all geeks in Växjö have been waiting for…🤪

On the 6th-7th of April, Open.Science.Hack will take place at Linnaeus University, Sweden, a 24h-hackathon promoting open source and open science.

The event is organized by different local IT networks, including the student organizations Kodkollektivet and SPIIK.com, the female network WiTech IT-network Sverige, the IT forum #vxodev, and researchers at Linnaeus University, Sweden, Open.Science.Hack will gather students, business professionals, and researchers passionate about IT. The event will be held in English and is free of charge.

#Openscience is a massive, global movement towards making scientific research available and accessible to everyone.
