Efter många års målmedvetet arbete, där berörda medarbetare uthålligt och engagerat drivit fram förutsättningarna, har nu Universitetskanslersämbetet äntligen gett oss klartecken för en civilingenjörsutbildning i mjukvaruteknik. Glädjen är stor, och som rektor kan jag inte känna annat än stor stolthet. Rättigheten att starta civilingenjörsutbildningar är allmängiltig, vilket betyder att vi i framtiden har möjlighet att starta civilingenjörsutbildningar med andra inriktningar. Det finns till exempel redan nu planer på att om ett par år starta civilingenjörsutbildningar i byggteknik samt maskinteknik. 

Beskedet är därmed ett första steg på en resa där vi successivt kommer att bidra till att stärka regionens konkurrenskraft. Sverige behöver ingenjörer. Linnéregionen behöver ingenjörer. Den här utbildningen är mycket viktig för regionen, där den framtida kompetensförsörjningen inom teknik och data är av största vikt. Vi är en IT-intensiv region och vi ska fortsätta att vara i framkant genom nytänkande utbildning och nära samarbeten med regionala aktörer. Civilingenjörsutbildningen kan fungera som en katalysator för hela regionen – vi kan redan nu ana den kraft som finns inneboende i utbildningen, när vi ser hur olika aktörer i hela regionen med glädje och intresse tagit emot beskedet, och uppmärksammat det utifrån den betydelse utbildningen har för deras respektive verksamhet.

För Linnéuniversitetet som lärosäte kommer detta naturligtvis att innebära en förhöjd status. Civilingenjörsutbildningen är den mest prestigefulla utbildningen inom teknikområdet. Det är rimligt att anta att detta kommer att leda till en starkare profilering av universitetet och nya möjligheter till att utveckla det tekniska området. Vi kommer att locka forskare som kan bidra till den nytta vi skapar i våra befintliga samarbeten, och stötta i etableringen av nya. Vi behöver externa partners för att fortsätta utveckla vår utbildning och forskning i den positiva riktning vi har, där vårt arbete med fundraising nu får en injektion.

Planeringen av civilingenjörsutbildningen i mjukvaruteknik är långt framskriden och vi ser verkligen fram emot att välkomna de första civilingenjörsstudenterna till Linnéuniversitetet nästa höst!

Green light for degree of master of science in engineering!

After many years of focused work, where members of staff have worked tirelessly and with great commitment to get the right conditions in place, the Swedish Higher Education Authority has now given us green light to offer a degree of master of science in engineering with specialisation in software technology. This is a joyful moment, and as vice-chancellor I feel really proud of what we have achieved. Our degree-awarding power for degree of master of science in engineering is generally applicable, which means that in the future it will be possible for us to offer masters of science in engineering also with other specialisations. Already at this point, there are plans to start masters of science in engineering with specialisations in building technology and mechanical engineering within a couple of years.

Thus, this is the first step on a journey where we gradually will contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the region. Sweden needs engineers. The Linnaeus region needs engineers. This programme is very important for the region, where the future skills supply within technology and data is of utmost importance. We are an IT-intense region and we shall continue to be on the forefront through innovative education and close collaborations with reginal actors. The master of science in engineering can function as a catalyst for the entire region – we can already discern the innate strength of the programme, when we see how different actors in the region have expressed both joy and interest when hearing about the news, and paid attention to it based on the significance the programme will have for their respective activities.

This will naturally lead to Linnaeus University gaining a higher status as a higher education institution. The master of science in engineering is the most prestigious programme within the field of technology. It is reasonable to assume that this will lead to a stronger profiling of the university and to new opportunities to develop the field of technology. We will attract researchers who can contribute to the utility we create in our existing collaborations and support the establishment of new ones. We need external partners to continue to develop our education and research in a positive direction, where our work with fundraising now gets an injection.

The planning of the master of science in engineering with specialisation in software technology is at an advanced stage and we really look forward to welcoming the first master of science in engineering students to Linnaeus University next autumn!
